Apology to Nigel Martin Smith

October 18, 2006

On September 4th and 14th we wrote about "The Nineties", a song written by Robbie Williams for his soon to be released album.

The first piece carried quotes from the song and quotes from Robbie himself which alleged that Nigel Martin Smith, who used to manage Take That, either stole the profits from a European tour or incompetently failed to make any and lied to the band when they asked about it.

In fact, there is absolutely no truth in these allegations. The European tour did make money, the band were paid and the accounts were scrutinised by accountants and found to be unimpeachable.

We sincerely apologise to Nigel Martin Smith for the distress caused by publishing these allegations and have agreed to pay him compensation.

Wow

Не знала, что Роб продал столько альбомов..

Robbie Williams may rule the UK, but U.S. don't know him from Mrs. Doubtfire

Williams` solo career started brightly in the United States, with his ballad 'Angels' peaking on The Billboard Hot 100 at No. 53 in 2000. But since then, his seemingly doomed attempts to convert America have become as essential a part of his U.K. tabloid persona as his struggles with alcohol and drugs and his dalliances with celebrities from Rachel Hunter to Nicole Kidman.

Williams last made a concerted assault upon America in 2003 with album 'Escapology' (Chrysalis). But despite debuting at No. 43 on The Billboard 200, the album soon slipped from view, and Williams subsequently canceled plans to further tour the States. His career album sales to date stateside total slightly less than 1 million, according to Nielsen SoundScan, with U.S. debut 'The Ego Has Landed' (Capitol), a compilation of his first two U.K. records, accounting for more than half that figure. Neither his last album, 'Intensive Care' (2005), nor his new, electronica-inspired 'Rudebox,' out Oct. 23 in the United Kingdom, has had a physical U.S. release.

Williams lives in Los Angeles for much of the year but seems to have given up on making America his spiritual home, declaring in one recent U.K. radio interview: "The only way an album of mine is going to be in the States is if I leave it in Tower Records."

EMI Music U.K. & Ireland chairman/CEO Tony Wadsworth says demand from Williams` hardcore American fan base "is satisfied by imports and digitally" and attributes Williams` lack of progress there to the artist deliberately choosing to concentrate on other territories.

"When the American music business sees the sort of numbers he can do on record and live then they`ll start to realize that perhaps focusing his resources in the way that he has done was a clever thing to do," Wadsworth says. "He does between 5 and 6 million copies on every album without the United States. So, does he need the States? From a strictly business point of view, I would say the answer is 'no.'"

Others remain convinced that Williams still has a shot at U.S. success. James Blunt`s manager, 21st Artists` Todd Interland, says "You`re Beautiful" hit No. 1 in the United States thanks to Blunt`s work ethic.

"I think Robbie`s probably just giving it a brief rest because deep down every artist wants to conquer America," Interland says. "But Robbie would need to work differently to make it there. It`s so competitive in America, you can`t rest on your laurels and say, 'I`m a big star in the rest of the world.' You`ve really got to do the work."

The domestic buzz on 'Rudebox' is low-key for a Williams release, thanks to its much-touted "experimental" direction and the relative failure of its title track lead single, which peaked at No. 4 on the Official U.K. Charts Co. survey and spent only four weeks in the top 20. Lead singles from Williams albums generally peak at No. 1 or No. 2. But the retail sector remains enthusiastic over what is still likely to be one of 2006`s biggest-selling albums.

Gary Rolfe, head of music for U.K. market-leading retailer HMV, says: "The simple fact of the matter is that Robbie has a huge and dedicated fan base that is receptive to everything he tries. He now consistently delivers 2 million-plus sales for each major release. I don`t see why it should be any different for this album." And internationally, Williams remains hot property. He will perform two songs at the MTV Video Music Awards Latin America Oct. 19 in Mexico City - and his huge popularity in South America may yet provide him with a backdoor route to the States.

Jose Tillan, senior VP of music programming and talent strategy for MTV Networks Latin America and MTV Tr3s, is mystified that huge success in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Chile and Colombia has failed to translate to the United States. "The songs are great, he`s a good-looking guy . . . you`d think it was a no-brainer for the American market," Tillan says. "If we got another 'Angels,' we`d definitely try to do something with it on MTV Tr3s."

In the meantime, Williams will just have to console himself with being music`s biggest artist outside America.

U.S. success eludes superstar Williams

In the United Kingdom, he is the single most recognizable musician working today, winner of a record 18 BRIT Awards and maker of six consecutive No. 1 studio albums. Worldwide, EMI Music says he has sold more than 51 million albums, singles and DVDs, with his last album opening at No. 1 in 18 different territories. His current world tour will see him play to 2.6 million fans, from Buenos Aires to Brisbane and Cape Town to Copenhagen.

Williams' solo career started brightly in the United States, with his ballad "Angels" peaking on the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 53 in 2000. But since then, his seemingly doomed attempts to convert America have become as essential a part of his UK tabloid persona as his struggles with alcohol and drugs and his dalliances with celebrities from Rachel Hunter to Nicole Kidman.

FOCUSSING ELSEWHERE

Williams lives in Los Angeles for much of the year but seems to have given up on making America his spiritual home, declaring in one recent UK radio interview: "The only way an album of mine is going to be in the States is if I leave it in Tower Records."

EMI Music UK & Ireland chairman/CEO Tony Wadsworth says demand from Williams' hardcore American fan base "is satisfied by imports and digitally" and attributes Williams' lack of progress there to the artist's choice to concentrate on other territories.

SOUTH OF THE BORDER

Internationally, Williams remains hot property. He will perform two songs at the MTV Video Music Awards Latin America October 19 in Mexico City -- and his huge popularity in South America may yet provide him with a back-door route to the States.

Williams is perhaps the top-selling international act in Latin America at the moment. According to EMI, in the region he has sold nearly 3 million copies of his entire catalogue, dating back to 1998. He has aggressively targeted the Latin market via Spanish-language versions of his hits "Angels" and "Sing When You're Winning."

Jose Tillan, senior vice president of music programming and talent strategy for MTV Networks Latin America and the Latin-focused MTV Tr3s, is mystified that huge success in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Chile and Colombia has failed to translate to the United States. "The songs are great, he's a good-looking guy ... you'd think it was a no-brainer for the American market," Tillan says.

WILLIAMS: 'I'LL ONLY QUIT IF I FALL IN LOVE'

Pop singer ROBBIE WILLIAMS will never retire from music - unless he falls in love. The 32-year-old, whose latest album RUDEBOX is released next week (23OCT06), has no plans to quit while there is no special lady in his life. He says, "There is always a song to be written. Until this dies within me, I will continue. "If I fall in love and want to travel around the world with that person, then perhaps I will stop. "But I am not in love. I have work to do which gives me a purpose in life."

Robbie Williams leads list of American rejects

BILLBOARD

Sir Elton John calls him "the No. 1 star in the world." In the United Kingdom, he is the single most recognizable musician working today, winner of a record 18 BRIT Awards and maker of six consecutive No.

But not every worldwide star gets to be a star in the United States. Ask Americans what they think of Robbie Williams and they'll probably tell you he hasn't made a decent movie since "Mrs. Doubtfire."

Williams' solo career started brightly in the United States, with his ballad "Angels" peaking on The Billboard Hot 100 at No. 53 in 2000. But since then, his seemingly doomed attempts to convert America have become as essential a part of his U.K. tabloid persona as his struggles with alcohol and drugs and his dalliances with celebrities from Rachel Hunter to Nicole Kidman.

My Madonna song's stalkerish

[реклама вместо картинки]

October 20, 2006

IT’S taken a decade and nine albums but Robbie Williams has finally dared to make the album he’s always wanted to make.

Teaming up with Pet Shop Boys, Lily Allen, William Orbit and uber producer Mark Ronson, Robbie has turned his back on his usual pop niche market, bravely stepping out of his trademark music zone with his most experimental album to date.

Gone are the lighters-aloft ballads and cheeky sing-along anthems, replaced by rap (well Robbie’s attempts to) electro-grooves, covers of Eighties hits and a self-confessed stalker tribute to Madonna.

Robbie says: “I’m more confident now. When I left Take That and started my solo career, I developed a songwriting partnership with Guy Chambers that just ran and ran for five albums and you get into a comfort zone. You know this person and you know what you’re going to do — you’re not scared to try things out.

“And as that ran its course, I had no other option but to go out and explore and go and work with other people. Mark’s given me the confidence to go and do that.”

Clearly Robbie has got bored with the musical style that made him a star — and you have to admire him for daring to break away. But is it too late?

Rudebox, his first release from the album has been ridiculed. Rightly so. Robbie’s attempts to rap are more Goldie Lookin’ Chain than Mike Skinner.

When it does work, as on the anthemic Lovelight — a sweeping funked-up cover of the Lewis Taylor soul track — it is up there with his best.

And Never Touch That Switch, a track written by Soul Mekanik gives him the credibility he is desperate for.

Robbie says: “When I was a kid all I listened to was hip-hop. My first records were Electro-1 and Electro-5. At school, all I ever listened to was Eazy-E, NWA, Public Enemy and The Jungle Brothers. Every week I’d buy a new tape with the money my grandma kindly gave me.”

On Bong Bong and Je Ne T’aime Plus, a cover of French folk singer Manu Chao, Lily Allen provides backing vocals and it is one of album’s decent cover versions.

With its pounding tribal beat and Lily’s dreamy-vocals, this track is one of the best. Robbie says: “I picked songs only a certain cross section of people would know. King Of The Bongo was one and Lovelight was one of those. I wouldn’t have known about Lovelight if it hadn’t have been for Tom Middleton’s The Trip album. I fell in love with it instantly. I can’t believe how big that song is and no one knows it.

“And King Of The Bongo was played to me by a couple of friends of mine six years ago and I always thought ‘I’ve got to cover this’ and now was the right time.

“There is a whole catalogue of things I’d like to do, I’d like to do a covers album of covers. There are some really good covers of covers to cover.”

She’s Madonna is the talking track of the album. Written by Robbie and his pals Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, it’s got the signature chiming electro sound of the Pet Shop Boys all over, with witty lyrics about Guy Ritchie dumping ex Tania Strecker (also an ex of Robbie’s) for Madge.

Robbie explains: “I sent the track to Madonna and she really liked it. I also sent her Rudebox and she didn’t really like it. You could say that the track is a bit stalkerish. She wanted to know what it was about. I lied.

“She said, ‘Is it the futility of being in love with Madonna? Is it the futility of being in a relationship with Madonna? Do you like Madonna in the track?’ It’s quite a day sending a song to Madonna about her. She’d heard I’d done it.”

But this album isn’t going to win over any new Robbie fans because as a ninth album, experimentation comes too late.

His covers of Stephen ‘Tin Tin’ Duffy’s Kiss Me and The Human League’s Louise are akin to any karaoke down your local pub — despite Joey Negro and William Orbit twiddling the production knobs.

Plus, the rapping really makes this album an easy target to laugh at.

SFTW VERDICT: All in all Robbie deserves a pat on the back for finally rounding up some cool-name co-writers and producers.

It’s just a shame his comedy rap vocals let the songs down.

WILLIAMS' 'SPECIAL OLYMPICS' LYRIC UPSETS DISABLED

Pop star ROBBIE WILLIAMS has been slammed by disabled organisations after a lyric on his new album calls for fans to "dance like you just won the Special Olympics". Williams' latest disc, RUDEBOX, is released this week (begs23OCT06) and the unedited version of the title track has angered many. When released as a single the word "special" was cut from Rudebox to avoid offending listeners - but the uncensored version is on the album. ANNE PRIDMORE, chairwoman of the British Council Of Disabled People, says, "I am a big Robbie Williams fan and I went to see him recently, but I will not be buying this album. "I find the lyric about the Special Olympics highly offensive and it is rank disablism." But Williams' spokeswoman says, "He adores sport of any kind and is full of admiration for disabled athletes."

I'M JUST THE GIRL TO SHUT ROBBIE UP

Lucy Sweet

I'VE never been much of a fan of Robbie Williams . . . he's got a face made for punching and his records are rubbish.

In fact, give me Mark Owen any day.

But Robbie's lonely plight touched my heart this week when I read that all he wants to do is fall in love.

Robbie, who is about to release another critically panned album, Rudebox, said:"If I fall in love and want to travel round the world with that person, perhaps I'll stop doing music."

I couldn't believe it. Could this also mean he'll quit the self-indulgent whining about how hard it is to be a lonely rock star with a squillion pounds in the bank? If so, I would like to grit my teeth and volunteer my services.

I'm 34, with a GSOH, VBK (Very Big Knockers) and a valid 10-year passport.

So where do you want to go, Robbie? Lanzarote? Majorca? Benidorm? Ayr?

Oh yeah, and I, er ... love you, by the way.

Lovelight - The Remixes

http://www.sendspace.com/file/oo2v3b

http://www.sendspace.com/file/1ruoip

"Lovelight" is an Pop-rock song written by Lewis Taylor and recorded for his 2003 album Stoned, Pt. 1. Robbie Williams recorded a cover version of it for his 2006 album Rudebox, and it is scheduled for release as the album's second single in November 2006. Williams said "I can't believe how big that song is and no one knows it." Mark Ronson, who produced the cover, compared Williams' "great classic blue-eyed soul vocal" on the song to George Michael, Andy Gibb and Hall & Oates.

Jake Nava directed the single's video, which was shot in Vienna and premiered on ITV1 on 6 October.
